About the Author

The late Dr. Mendenhall served in the Navy in the Korean War and obtained a Ph.D. in Statistics at North Carolina State University. After receiving his Ph.D, he was a professor in the Mathematics Department at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania before moving to Gainesville in 1963 where he was the first chairman of the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida. Dr. Mendenhall published articles in some of the top statistics journals, such as Biometika and Technometrics; however, he is more widely known for his prolific textbook career. He authored or co-authored approximately 13 Statistics textbooks and several books about his childhood.

Richard L. Scheaffer, Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Florida, received his Ph.D. in statistics from Florida State University. Accompanying a career of teaching, research and administration, Dr. Scheaffer has led efforts on the improvement of statistics education throughout the school and college curriculum. Co-author of five textbooks, he was one of the developers of the Quantitative Literacy Project that formed the basis of the data analysis strand in the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also led the task force that developed the AP Statistics Program, for which he served as Chief Faculty Consultant. Dr. Scheaffer is a Fellow and past president of the American Statistical Association, a past chair of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, and an advisor on numerous statistics education projects.

Top review from Australia

Good resource. There are additional question and answer books to supplement the book.

At the end of the day this book brought me great sadness, stress and insecurities. I learned more about myself than I did stats. Pray for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Exercises without any way to correct them by yourself

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2016

I bought the book to practice aside of my lecture and recap. Explanations are okay. BUT there is a lack in concept when it comes to the "with Applications". The exercises are nearly useless, because there is no way to correct and learn from them. Some chapters give you 20 exercises but only 5 results. And we are just talking about plain results (e.g. 3.1xx=.764) and not the calculations process, any hints or description. The additional "solution" book also covers only the same exercises. If you did a calc or logical mistake, there is no way to correct it as long you don't spend hours until you find it. If you don't do any mistakes, fine, then the book will be perfect for you.
In the end, I'm really disappointed by the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good at explaining steps, missing 1/2 the answers

Actually a pretty good text book, I've used it for two classes and one of my profs was terrible, but this textbook saved my butt. It seems kind of stupid to only have every other answer printed though - exercises are useless if you don't know whether you did it right or not.
